There is a weekly topic and picture book with a variety of activities for various subjects that relate back to that topic and book. This curriculum is called Five Senses Literature Lessons and was written by an occupational therapist. At the end of last year I was blessed to find a simpler curriculum that I could easily customize to my daughter to help tie everything together – and to help us make sure that we don’t forget some of the fun activities that go along with being a young elementary student while we are busy working on our challenging areas. It felt like many balls were in the air and I was constantly dropping one or another. With all of the special areas that we need to hit with my daughter: gross motor skills, fine motor skills, AAC modeling, handwriting, emergent literacy skills, numbers, occupational therapy, speech therapy, etc. This was the next best thing to there being two of me! 🙂

I always feel like I need more arms and eyes – I need more of me! 🙂 About midway through last year I found that if played a youtube video recording of the picture book we were reading and discussing that it was another way to help focus my daughter’s attention and would free me up to focus on communicating and modeling with her device while the story was being told. I will admit it is often challenging trying to homeschool especially since both of my daughters learn so very differently.

In the last year I have sought to educate myself about AAC literacy and what the journey may look like for our family as we teach our daughter how to read. We have been getting prepared for the new school year here at our house.
